I take a holistic approach to training, combining theoretical and knowledge based learning, experiential yoga sessions, personal development practices, group discussions and peer support. The course is taught in a way that embodies the principles of teaching people with cancer and is designed to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
So much of what is required to teach people with cancer is down the to presence and energy we bring to a teaching space, combined with the underlying knowledge and skills to adapt in the moment to the people in front of us. This is why I like to teach the course over a long period to allow for the integration of the knowledge that is shared, to practise new skills and to give time for personal development to occur.
Places are limited to 18 so that I can provide individual teaching and support throughout the course.

The course is designed consider the holistic needs both of people with cancer and yoga teachers who work with them. I want you to complete the course feeling confident and grounded in your own knowledge and ability to:

COURSE CONTENT:
Week 1 - Understanding Cancer and Medical Treatments. This helps you understand cancer terminology and takes a look at the common forms of cancer treatment and the holistic impact it has on patients.
Week 2 - Communication Skills, Boundaries & Ethics. There are special considerations needed when working with cancer patients and this week delves into suitable language in and out of the classroom as well as exploring some boundary and ethical issues that may come up.
Week 3 - Stress, Trauma & Fatigue. These are all very common problems for people going through cancer treatment and we look and how and why they occur and how we can adapt our teaching to offer support and address these issues.
Week 4 - Asana Practice & Breathing. This is the first part of focusing on lesson planning. We look at the purpose and benefits of asana and breath work for cancer patients and underlying principles of this specialist lesson planning.
Week 5 - Yoga after Breast Surgery. With breast cancer being the most common cancer for women who make the majority of yoga students I have included this specialist module. We cover different types of surgery, holistic considerations for women and yoga as rehab after breast surgery.
Week 6 - Restorative Yoga & Meditation. This is part two of focusing on lesson planning. Here we dive into the benefits of restful yoga and mediation, some precautions we may need to take and principles for suitable practise.
Week 7 - Medical or ‘Crash’ Menopause. This is a common and underserved side effect of cancer and cancer treatment. This week we look at how medical menopause occurs and what we can offer as yoga teachers to support women affected by it.
Week 8 - Live teaching practise for course participants. This is often the most popular week of the course. It is where all participants have the opportunity to teach a short practise or sequence to the group and take part in feedback discussions. Everyone learns from this experience including me!
Week 9 - Support Networks and Creating a term of Yoga for Cancer Classes. This week is in two halves. Section one covers the importance of wider support networks for our students, for ourselves and how to start creating them. Section two gives you guidance and inspiration for creating a term or series of classes.
Week 10 – Integration, finding work, extended Q&A. In the final week we bring together and recap the whole course into a wider context and look at ways you can find or create work once the course is over. There is also an extended open Q&A session for any questions you have from any aspect of the course.
Weekly live yoga for cancer class. Every week I teach a yoga for cancer class as part of the lie zoom session for you to experience and learn from. This will give lots of content and inspiration for your own classes.
Comprehensive Course Manual. This is included in the course and is for you to keep. It covers in depth all the content of the course for you to read as you go along and to refer back to whenever you need.
Additional FREE 90 min group mentoring session. This will take place once the course is completed at an agreed date to support you taking your new learning into your teaching business. This is optional and not a requirement for qualification.
