Karen Wilson
My name is Karen Wilson. I juggle being a mum of two humans and 2 dogs with running my business. I started practising in Chicago as a means of meeting people whilst I was on assignment with my job. On my return to the UK I continued my practice, attending various classes whilst continuing my corporate job. In 2009 I decided to re-order my life and combine my passion for yoga with the desire for a ‘career’. I left my 9-5 job and started my teaching diploma. I taught my first class a year into my course and 9 months after having my son. Over 10 years on and I haven’t looked back once!
There have been a lot of changes in my life since 2009 - relocations, different jobs, getting married, studying, two pregnancies, motherhood and even the way in which I practise yoga. However yoga has been with me throughout, both on and off the mat regardless of how small a time I have, I manage to fit it in. The yoga philosophy has helped me come to understand and manage the changes and the time on my mat has helped me to hold onto something concrete whilst also understanding that even my yoga practice has to adapt with life.
I love learning and enjoy doing further training. I have completed professional development in yoga for cancer (those undergoing treatment, post surgery and carer support), long covid and chronic fatigue syndrome and yoga for athletes. I have also completed additional studies in menstrual cycle awareness and knee rehabilitation. I am looking forward to learning how to use yoga for perimenopause and menopause too.
My teacher training is recognised by the British Wheel of Yoga, Yoga Alliance and The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA). I am also fully insured.
My classes incorporate the philosophy of hatha yoga with the asana (postural work) and prananyama (breath control). I teach online and in-person classes ranging from mixed ability yoga classes, private on-to-one yoga, pregnancy yoga, postnatal mum and baby yoga and a baby massage course which I do in collaboration with a registered mid-wife and IBCLC practitioner.
I have worked with a number of students before, during and after their cancer treatment and have seen the benefits that practising yoga can help on their physical and mental health. I also teach in the Well-Being Centre at Woking and Sam Beare Hospice on a regular basis continuing to share the benefits of yoga with patients, bereaved loved ones and staff. This is work that I am very grateful to be able to do.
